Role Overview:
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading mechanical design, prototyping, supplier engagement, and manufacturing transition activities for Myant’s wearable and sensing platforms. The role combines hands-on engineering, supplier collaboration, and product development leadership to ensure innovative concepts are translated into robust, manufacturable products.
Responsibilities:
Mechanical Engineering & Product Development
- Lead mechanical engineering design and development for wearable and textile-integrated technologies.
- Develop mechanical systems and components supporting biometric sensing platforms and smart garments.
- Guide projects from concept through prototype, validation, and production readiness.
- Mentor and support other engineers in mechanical design best practices and engineering standards.
- Define and maintain documentation and standards required for outsourced mechanical assemblies.
- Design mechanical components and assemblies using modern CAD tools.
- Conduct design reviews and ensure alignment across engineering teams and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, firmware, electrical, software, textile, and industrial design to ensure effective system integration.
- Support the assembly, integration, and debugging of prototypes and development systems.
- Develop test plans and validation strategies for mechanical systems.
Manufacturing & Supplier Collaboration
- Support the transition from rapid prototyping to scalable mass manufacturing.
- Identify, evaluate, and onboard suppliers and manufacturing partners.
- Develop technical statements of work and collaborate closely with suppliers to meet manufacturing requirements.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Test (DFT) principles to product development.
- Prepare procurement documentation including RFPs, RFIs, and RFQs and support supplier negotiations.
Outsourcing & Production Execution
- Manage supplier relationships and coordinate outsourced mechanical manufacturing activities.
- Ensure external partners meet required quality, cost, and timeline expectations.
- Support internal procurement processes including purchase requisitions for engineering development.
- Evaluate supplier performance against procurement and technical requirements.
Quality & Product Validation
- Ensure mechanical designs meet performance, durability, and regulatory standards.
- Develop and implement testing strategies including:
- Stress and durability testing
- Waterproofing and environmental validation
- Wearable device reliability testing
- Support product validation aligned with applicable standards such as ISO and medical device frameworks where applicable.
- Work closely with quality and regulatory teams to ensure product compliance.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 9+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably designing consumer electronics, wearable devices, or medical technologies.
- Proven experience developing products from prototype through mass production.
- Strong hands-on design experience using 3D CAD platforms such as SolidWorks or Onshape.
- Experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and precision machining.
- Expertise applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to injection-molded components and plastics.
- Experience with material selection, tolerance analysis, and technical drawing interpretation.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes including injection molding, overmolding, and two-shot molding.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers (CMs) including tooling development and assembly line setup.
- Experience developing and executing mechanical validation and test plans.
- Ability to independently make engineering decisions and provide technical recommendations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced product development environment.
- Experience in wearable technologies, smart textiles, biometric sensing systems (ECG, EMG, EEG), or medical device development (IEC 60601, ISO 13485) is considered an asset.
